Ngā Kākano is committed to supporting rangatahi and helping them navigate health and other issues, in order to equip and support them to make positive decisions for the future they deserve.

The services listed on this page are free, mobile and accessible to all rangatahi.

Te Whakaoho o Te Mauri

The service aims:

Te Whakaoho o Te Mauri is for Rangatahi who may be at risk of developing alcohol and other drug problems. We provide alcohol and drug education within a tikanga framework. This programme will empower tamariki and rangatahi (Youth) to:

  • Build identity and confidence
  • Understand whānau principles and values
  • Grow knowledge to increase positive development for safe and healthy lifestyle choices and behaviours.

This service provides:

  • Health education and awareness about alcohol and other drugs
  • Māori based activities
  • One on one awhi and manaakitanga
  • Alcohol and other drugs assessments as appropriate
  • Referrals to Residential services (if needed)
  • Support and more information for whānau
  • Support and more information for schools.

Entry Criteria:

  • Age 16-25 years
  • Isses with alcohol and drug use, or
  • Be at risk of developing alcohol and other drug problems

Rangitahi 16 years and over can self-refer for this programme or ask a parent/caregiver to assist them. Referrals from community, schools, whānau and other agencies are welcome.

E tū Rangatahi

This programme is strength based and provides a holistic framework to support:

  • Mauri Ora (Māori identity, te reo Māori and wellbeing)
  • Waiora (protecting our environment)
  • Toiora (healthy lifestyles)
  • Te Oranga (the power of opening doors and participation) and
  • Ngā Manakura (leadership)

The cultural activities strengthen resilence, stress-management, strategies to reduce anxiety, and behavioral issues. E tū Rangatahi aims to nurture, identify and develop the aspirations of tamariki and rangatahi. This programme is delivered every Thursday after school from 3.30-5.30pm (during the school term). Parents and teachers will be notified of any changes that are made. Ngā Kākano provides transports to pick up and drop off.

 

Entry Criteria:

  • Age Groups are from 8- 16 years
  • All tamariki/rangatahi will need parent/caregiver consent via referral to access this programme.
  • Ngā Kākano will accept whānau referrals, school referrals with the consent of parents/caregivers.

AT A GLANCE

  • Fun cultural activities that nurture young people to build resilience, dream big and manage issues such as stress and anxiety

Aroha ki te Tangata

This programme operators a Whānau Ora approach to providing holistic support to tamariki to promote self-identity, cultural identity and to raise confidence, using a range of health education awareness and activities to affirm key messages of Aroha Whanaungatanga, Manaakitanga and Tautoko.

The service aims to improve behaviour, social-emotional skills which include but are not limited to skills to form close, secure relationships; engage in positive interactions with others; persist; problem solve; understand, identify, express and regulate emotions; and resolve peer conflicts; as well as developing capacity to summon strength in adverse situations.

 

Entry Criteria:

  • Age Groups are from 6-10 years
  • All tamariki/rangatahi will need parent/caregiver consent via referral to access this programme
  • Ngā Kākano will accept whānau referrals, school referrals with the consent of parents/caregivers.

Tutū te Puehu

This programme supports a Kaupapa Maori directed approach to encouraging healthy lifestyle changes for our tamariki/rangatahi who may struggle with maintaining healthy eating habits and keeping physically active.

Using a holistic approach, we work collaboratively with each whānau to support our rangatahi through a programme specifically suited to their individual needs. This includes nutritional support, physical education options and activities.

  • Age Groups are from 5-18 years
  • All tamariki/rangatahi will need parent/caregiver consent via referral to access this programme
  • Ngā Kākano will accept whānau referrals, school referrals with the consent of parents/caregivers.
